He made his name with three Clubs, but 20 years after he retired from the game, Essendon is now home for Greg Williams.

The premiership player and two-time Brownlow medal winner has taken on a specialist role with the Bombers that focuses on upskilling the playing list.

“I spend a lot of time with the players trying to improve their technique and most players have got issues – whether it’s kicking, handballing or ball handling in general,” Williams said.

“We’re really narrowing it right down, so they can do it as well as they possibly can.”

Essendon Coach John Worsfold approached Williams last year about taking on a role with the Club.

The pair had worked together when Worsfold was an Assistant Coach at Carlton.

“I’m only here three days a week but I find that’s enough and I’m really enjoying it,” Williams said.

“Footy is my passion and I’m really enjoying it at the moment.”

Williams was a central figure in the rivalry that escalated between Essendon and Carlton throughout the 1990’s.

“The rivalry is huge - in the Sheedy days when I played for Carlton it was the biggest match of the year and I loved playing against the Bombers,” he said.

“The two sides have won 16 Grand Finals and from the Carlton side I know that’s a big issue, they want to get to the 17th first and Essendon wants to as well.”

This Sunday, Williams will be a keen observer as the next chapter in the Essendon-Carlton rivalry is written.

“It’ll be a big game, I’m sure there will be a huge crowd and ‘our boys’ the Bombers … it’s hard to say I’m a Bomber but I really am committed here and I really hope the Bombers kick their arse,” he said.
