Here are some of the main talking points stemming from the Bombers big win over Collingwood in round two of the VFL season.

David Myers

Myers made a return from injury, his first game back in more than 18 months.  He had a huge impact on the game, finishing with 35 disposals, eight marks, seven tackles and one goal.  Myers has played just two senior games in the last two seasons. His leadership, contested ball winning ability and long left boot would be a welcome inclusion for the Bombers in the coming weeks.

Final Margin

The 80-point thrashing of Collingwood provided an element of déjà vu, with the margin just five points shy of last year’s win in the corresponding match.  Essendon started strongly, claiming a 42-point lead at half time. The Dons then continued to soar over the top of the Pies, increasing their lead at each break.

The final result was Essendon’s biggest winning margin since last year’s round three match against the Pies.

The VFL list

It’s only two rounds in but you can see why there is a feeling of optimism at the Bombers this season. The strength of the VFL list was again on show. Nick Hind provided dash from defence, while James Peters was a constant threat in the forward half. There was also a lot to like about the performance of Alex Boyse who pulled down 12 marks.

Tom Bellchambers

Bellchambers has continued his great start to the season, throwing his hand up for senior selection with a three goal performance. He also laid two tackles and collected 15 disposals.

Rivalry

Tensions threatened to boil over at Windy Hill with multiple scuffles breaking out throughout the match. Although both teams were hard at the contest, there were no reports made.

Round three

With a six day turn around into round three, the focus at training will be predominately on recovery.

Essendon will take on Werribee at Arden Street Oval on Saturday from 2pm.
