Chern’ee Sutton’s artwork has been shown around the world and on Saturday night her design will be on display in front of a near capacity crowd when the Bombers take on Richmond in the Dreamtime at the ‘G clash.

The Indigenous artist designed Essendon’s guernsey for the Indigenous Round match.

“It’s going to be absolutely amazing, seeing photos is nothing compared to seeing them run out onto the field,” Sutton said.

Sutton’s passion for painting was ignited when she won an art competition as a 13 year old.

Since then her artwork has been displayed at Queensland’s Parliament House, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore and London.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are proud owners of one of Sutton’s pieces.

Her design for the Bombers guernsey features boomerangs representing the battles that will take place on the field, a kangaroo representing the side’s swiftness, agility and speed, and circles representing all of the different people that travel to the game.

The artwork has received the tick of approval from Gavin Wanganeen.

The Essendon champion designed the Club’s Dreamtime Guernsey last year.

“I always say photos don’t do justice to paintings or designs, so when you see it in person, that’s when you get the real, full impact,” Wanganeen said.

“I’m delighted with the design and the tones of the red and black in there so she’s done a marvellous job.

“It looks stunning.”

After a brilliant playing career that included two premierships and a Brownlow Medal, Wanganeen has focused his talents on his artwork and his design will feature on the footballs used in games across the round.

“It was a huge privilege to be asked by the AFL marketing team to do the design for the Indigenous Round, Sir Doug Nicholls Round,” he said.

“I went away and tried to think about what my story would be.

“What kept coming back to me was the importance of every AFL club to young Indigenous players who are chasing their dream.

“All of the circles represent each of those clubs and their importance as future homes for Indigenous kids chasing their dream, just like me.”
