At just 21 years old and standing 200cms tall, defender Jake Carlisle showed his full potential on Saturday with a dominant performance playing on Coleman medalist Jack Riewoldt.

Carlisle restricted the Richmond spearhead to just one goal, grabbing nine marks and collecting 18 disposals in the process.

Coach James Hird praised the youngster after the game for accepting the challenge that the coaching staff presented to him.

“He was terrific and I think we have been saying for a while that we have found a really good player,” Hird said.

“We mark him down every week to keep the opposition forward to a couple of goals, not do much and then attack.”

“It is probably the first time we have played him on their best forward, normally we play him on their second stringer but we thought we would give him a go and I thought he was really good.”

Carlisle has lined up on Riewoldt previously but not for an entire game.

“I think it helps (having played on him) in the positioning and what you can do off the ball in terms of taking his space early which I managed to do most of the night,” Carlisle said after the game.

“Every week we set to keep a team to under 80 points and I think we were good for patches of the game but there are still things we need to work on.”

The key defender is set for an exciting 2013 and will be looking to improve on his 18 senior matches last season.
