Essendon captain Dyson Heppell says the Bombers will not take the Western Bulldogs lightly despite their slow start to the home and away season.

The Bulldogs suffered heavy losses to Greater Western Sydney and West Coast in the opening two rounds, but Heppell expects them to put up a big fight against the Bombers on Sunday.

“As we showed last week (in Essendon’s loss to Fremantle), and with what we’ve seen in the last two rounds, you can’t be off your game at all and any team can pip you on their day,” Heppell said.

“The Dogs obviously had a big loss last week and they’ll be coming out firing, but I think we’ve also got a point to prove as well so it should be a hot start.

Essendon coach John Worsfold encouraged his side to calm its game down and show more composure after last week’s loss, and Heppell said there was no mixed messaging for the players despite Essendon’s typically fast and attacking brand of football.

“I don’t think there’s any confusion at all, it’s probably just more around a bit of composure from the players – just embracing that heat, embracing the pressure and being able to be composed with the ball as well.”

Dangerous small forward Orazio Fantasia is nearing his return to the line-up following pre-season knee surgery, and Heppell said he couldn’t wait to unleash the 22-year-old.

“Raz (Fantasia) adds a whole different dynamic to the group,” he said.

“He’s got that real speed, elite ball use and is a great contested mark for his side, so I’m looking forward to having Razzle back.”

The skipper said it was important to have selection pressure on the team as several other members of the club’s injured brigade close in on their return.

“I think that’s the key – being able to have a healthy list and guys competing for spots.

“It keeps intensity at training, it certainly keeps you on your toes and guys willing to improve and fight for those spots, so I’m loving the environment at the moment.”
