Three Essendon players have been named in the initial 40 man All Australian squad.

Joe Daniher, Michael Hurley and Zach Merrett have been included in the squad.

The final 22 will named on Wednesday.

Daniher booted a career-high 62 goals this season, while Hurley and Merrett averaged career-highs for disposals.

Hurley was named in the 2015 All Australian side, but Daniher and Merrett are among 26 players vying for their first ever selection in the All Australian team.
