Michael Hartley’s four-year wait for his AFL debut will come to an end on Saturday.

The former Collingwood rookie has been selected in the Bombers line-up to take on Melbourne.

“’Harts’ had a very good pre-season as a key defender,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold said.

“He missed out in round one but his form in the VFL practice match was outstanding again.

“He was our last pick in the draft last year – our seventh pick.

“We picked him because he had been a good key defender in the VFL and his form warrants his opportunity.”

Hartley’s time at the Magpies was disrupted by shoulder problems.

After his time with the Club ended he reignited his career through the VFL where he starred as a defender with Coburg, culminating in VFL Team of the Year honours.

On Saturday he’ll play in defence alongside James Gwilt, Paddy Ambrose and Matt Dea.

Worsfold said the side has responded well on the training track following the loss to Gold Coast.

“We learnt a lot from that game,” Worsfold said.

“Their attitude is great, they want to learn and they want to practice it.

“Training has been really upbeat which is what I’m looking for.”
