Bombers coach James Hird joined members of the Essendon board for a tour of the club’s new High Performance Centre near Melbourne Airport on Thursday.

The group were shown around the development site, including the two new ovals and were given an update on the progress of construction on the new training and administration facility.

Hird said he was extremely excited to be moving into a world class venue later this year.

“When the High Performance Centre is finished it will be the best training facility in the country, and that is very exciting,” Hird said.

“Players want to come to Essendon because it’s a great club, but they also want to come to Essendon because they receive good coaching and get to train at an elite facility.”

Hird praised the efforts of all members and supporters who have committed money to the project via the club’s Flight Plan fundraising initiative.

“The amount of money the club has had to raise is a massive task and I think every person who’s contributed our members and supporters, David Evans and the board, the Government, have done a great job.”

Essendon players have been training on the MCG sized oval since early January and are expected to be able to completely move into the new facility by mid way through 2013.

“There is no doubt having a proper sized ground with a really good cushioned surface is a huge plus,” Hird said

“We love Windy Hill, it has a great history and has been a big part of Essendon people’s lives for a long time but this site is a superior facility for our players.”

“To be able to train on our own MCG and Etihad sized grounds, without a cricket pitch in the middle, has been outstanding for our players.”

The current Flight Plan total stands at 815,262,
