The VFL Bombers found themselves in quite remarkable scenes over the weekend with a rare headcount being called.

The umpires halted play during the latter stages of the first quarter when the Roosters alleged that Essendon had an extra man on the field and called for the headcount.

It was deemed that Essendon had the correct number of players on the field, and in turn a 50 metre penalty was awarded the way of the Dons where a goal was scored.

If the Bombers were found to have transgressed their whole score at the time would have been wiped. Essendon led 26-7 at that time.

Ironically, North Ballarat was involved in the previous VFL headcount in 2013. On that occasion the Roosters were successful. It was the first successful headcount in VFL/AFL history.
