Persistent rain will only intensify the physical battle as Essendon begins its 2015 season against Sydney.

Rain has fallen steadily in the lead up to the game as the Bombers prepare to take on a Swans outfit renowned for their ability to win the contested ball.

“Playing on ANZ stadium is a big advantage, wider ground, bigger ground which will be a positive for Essendon” Bombers Specialist Coach Matthew Lloyd said.

“I think the key is that midfield battle.  Jobe (Watson), Dyson Heppell, Brent Stanton, Ben Howlett – can they dig in for a longer period than the Sydney Swans through the midfield?”

The rain may reduce Lance Franklin’s aerial threat but his mobility can still cause problems.

Coming off an All-Australian year, Lloyd expects Cale Hooker to start on the Swans forward.

But it’s the pressure from further up the ground that will be most effective in curbing Franklin’s brilliance.

“It comes down to how good his delivery is, so the pressure from downfield has to be really good, otherwise I think he’s unstoppable in a one-on-one situation.

“There has to be long, high balls coming in.  If Essendon can keep him to four (goals) or under they’ve done a pretty good job.”

The match against Sydney rounds out a big week for Essendon.

Cleared by the Anti-Doping Tribunal on Tuesday, Lloyd says there has been a noticeable spring in the step of players and staff.

“You could see a massive change in just the persona and the way everyone was getting around.  It was like a massive cloud had lifted off everyone.  I noticed the moment I walked through the doors here there was a huge change in everyone.”

Essendon boast an impressive round one record in recent seasons, having won its past four season openers.
