Essendon and Geelong will look to Saturday night as a season defining match after struggling to find fluency all year.

Both teams have recorded some exciting wins in 2015 but consistency has been an issue.

Can Heppell have a day out?

After a quiet couple of weeks on the field, Essendon will look to rising star Dyson Heppell to help lift the side in the absence of injured Captain Jobe Watson.

Heath Hocking, David Myers and now Watson all sit on the sidelines increasing the reliance on Heppell.

He will have the support of Ben Howlett and Brent Stanton, but Heppell is the main man.

Heppell gathered 40 disposals, laid seven tackles and collected three Brownlow votes in the loss to Geelong last year.

Can Colyer's form continue?

The number 32 is quickly becoming a vital asset for the Bombers.

His 11 goals have helped cement his spot in the best 22.

Colyer displayed his talent against Geelong in Round 15 last season when he collected 19 disposals and kicked two goals in Essendon’s third quarter turnaround.

The potential match up of Colyer and Steven Motlop is one to look out for.

Motlop was the difference in a tight contest last season and the Bombers will be keeping a close eye on him.

Will injuries be a factor?

Mitch Clark will miss the game for the Cats while Jobe Watson Is out for Essendon.

Both sides are already missing a couple of key players with Mitch Duncan and Jimmy Bartel injured for Geelong and David Zaharakis and David Myers absent for the Bombers.

It will be up to some of the lesser lights to stand up and a breakout performance from an unheralded player could be the difference.

Can Jake kick straight?

Jake Carlisle was dominant in the air against Richmond but struggled in front of goal.

He has done some extra work with Matthew Lloyd on the track his week, but much will depend on how Carlisle starts the match.

If he can convert his first opportunity then, given his marking form, he may be in for a big game.
