Efficient ball movement across the field is set to be vital to the success of Essendon’s forward line structure during the 2014 season.

The Bombers are set for a new look forward line this season with Michael Hurley moving into defence and Stewart Crameri and Scott Gumbleton finding new homes in the off-season.

“If it comes in fast and comes in to the forwards advantage then it certainly makes it a lot easier,” Assistant coach Nathan Bassett said.

“We have done a lot of work this pre-season on players recognizing what they can see in front of them and when it is time to go fast or slow down.”

Essendon is continuing to experiment with its forward line structure to try and find the right mix ahead of the first home and away game of the season against North Melbourne.

“We are trying to find a few guys that can play through the forward line having lost a couple,” Bassett said.

“Ambrose and Hardingham have both been going quiet well up there, I thought Jake was good again today but certainly we will have some good smallish forwards.”

“We will look to use Winderlich and Chapman up forward and they are both very good at getting on the end of it.”

Coach Mark Thompson has already flagged father/son selection Joe Daniher is expected to play at least 15 games this season.

Bassett said Daniher was continuing to show good improvement throughout the pre-seaosn in particular on the defensive side of his game.

“We have a lot of emphasis on his defensive work and it is easy to understand why he didn’t have to defend as a junior because he is so good offensively,” Bassett said.

“We need him to play his role defensively and we have seen some goo improvement the last couple of weeks with his intensity.”

“He is very good with tackling in close, it is now just about getting him to work more defensively in a bit more space but we are seeing some good improvement.”

“We are going to need to see him play his role up forward for us this year and if he does that then he will play a lot more games.”
