Former Fremantle forward Josh Mellington has shown his experience in his first hit out for Essendon’s VFL team on Saturday afternoon.

Mellington’s performance was highlights by a lively first quarter across half forward, booting two goals and setting up a number of forward entries.

Coach Hayden Skipworth said he expected Mellington to play a key role in the VFL team’s success in 2014.

“Josh shows a lot of class, he is going to kick a lot of goals and set up a lot of goals for us,” Skipworth said.

“We played him both forward and midfield and I have no doubt by the end of the year there will be a lot of teams talking about putting him on their list.”

Mellington played six games for Fremantle following his debut in 2011 but made the decision to return home to Victoria after being delisted at the end of 2013.

Aaron Heppell, the younger brother of star Bomber Dyson also showed his skill in his first match in the red and black.

Heppell played right across the field throughout the match showcasing his poise and decision-making under pressure.

“Aaron was excellent, we tried him in a number of positions and he performed well right across the ground,” Skipworth said.

“We think he is going to be a really important player for us this season.”

“He can play traditionally as a 23rd man but we see him playing in our best 22 after he plays his quota of games as a 23rd player.”

Heppell narrowly missed selection in the national draft with Essendon jumping at the opportunity to sign the up and coming 18-year-old.
