Essendon defender Michael Hibberd faces a race against time to be fit for Round 1 after sustaining a minor hamstring strain last night.

Hibberd was substituted out of the game mid-way through the second quarter of Tuesday’s 25-point loss to Port Adelaide.

Club doctor Bruce Reid said the 24-year-old was expected to be fit to take on North Melbourne on March 21 for the season opener.

“Michael has a grade one hamstring, it’s not a bad one but he will have a scan on it,” Reid said.

“Our first game is about three and a half weeks away which is around about when we would expect him to play.

“We will wait and see how he comes up over the next week and hopefully we will be able to get him through the standard rehabilitation to make him hopefully available.”

Hibberd said he was confident the injury would not keep him out of action for the start of the home and away season.

"Hopefully it'll only be two to three weeks and I'll be back for round one," Hibberd said.

"I just felt a bit of tightness chasing someone, so I just went off. You know with a NAB (Challenge) game there's no point staying on.”

A knee reconstruction for young midfielder Alex Browne was a success on Tuesday afternoon with the surgery going to plan.

Browne ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Gold Coast during the opening round of the NAB Challenge.

“The surgery went very good and everything went according to plan,” Reid said.

“It was finished by about 5.30 and at 11 o’clock last night he was up eating sandwiches and said he didn’t have any pain which is a good start.

“He was in great spirits considering everything that has happened and he was happy.”

Small forward Nick Kommer is hopeful of returning to the field shortly as he battles knee tendonitis.

“Nick has done a really good pre-season but he just had a bit of patella tendonitis a couple of weeks ago,” Reid said.

“We are just being cautious so that it doesn’t get away from us.”

David Myers and Jake Melksham will return to play in a VFL practice match on Saturday against Williamstown at the True Value Solar Centre.
