Essendon snatched their fourth win of the season with a nail-biting one point victory over Werribee on Sunday.

The Bombers got off to a quick start kicking three unanswered goals inside the first ten minutes before Werribee steadied kicking the next seven of the match to take the lead into half time.

Essendon piled on seven goals to three in the third term to regain the lead. Jacob Thompson bobbing up with two crucial goals in the quarter to bring the Bombers right back into the game.

The last quarter went goal for goal with the siren sounding seconds after Werribee kicked a goal to bring the margin back to the game winning one point.

Defender Ariel Steinberg said it was a really pleasing win after a tough month.

“It was just a really positive win with the way we found a way to win," Steinberg said.

“We’ve been thereabouts the last month or so, just to finish with a win can hopefully launch our season."

The Bombers were struggling to contain Werribee at the end of the first half, but Steinberg said that the message from coach Hayden Skipworth was to be more accountable.

“He just wanted us to be a bit more involved in the contest," he said.

“Our first quarter was great because we were being accountable and in the second quarter we just fell away from that."

Young defender Jason Ashby was given the big role on 2013 VFL leading goal-kicker Ben Warren and his performance didn’t go unnoticed by his team-mates.

“He was fantastic. I thought it was a great move to give Jase a key defensive role today."

“He used the ball well beautifully, he was able to run off him (Warren) really well when going forward. He was super."

Steinberg, Leroy Jetta, Travis Colyer and skipper Ben Duscher all played a big role in the team’s fightback in the second half.

“I’ve been here four years now, so there’s just no excuses, you have to stand up when the game is there to be won."

“Same with Travy (Colyer) and Leroy (Jetta), to stand up today was really important.

Essendon now look towards next Sunday afternoon where they take on Coburg who sit level on points with the Bombers heading into this clash.
