Essendon midfielder Dyson Heppell has been ruled out of Saturday night’s clash against Carlton with a foot injury.

The 21-year-old had scans on his foot on Monday showing an old injury to a growth plate had flared up during Saturday’s loss to North Melbourne.

Heppell has missed just three matches through injury since making his debut in Round 1 of 2011.

Football Operations Manager Steve Alessio said Heppell was a week-by-week proposition for the remainder of the season.

“Dyson will definitely miss this week but we are confident that the injury will settle and he will be available for the last round,” Alessio said.

“At the moment he is a week-by-week proposition.”

“The injury is giving him a bit of trouble now as it is a bit sore so we will assess that as the week’s go by.”

Alessio said the injury provided an opportunity for some of the club’s younger brigade to fill the void.

“That is the thing with football, when the opportunity is there you get to have a look at some good young talent come through,” Alessio said.

“The likes of Nick O’Brien last week who did a good shut down for us last week and Lauchie Dalgleish who came in for us off half back and through the midfield which provided some good run.”
