Saturday night was the final Football game of the GLoBALL program in season 2013, and a record crowd of 535 international students and ambassadors were in attendance to watch the live AFL action, for the majority their first ever match.

Established in 2009 by the Essendon Football Club, GLoBALL is now also jointly supported by Cricket Victoria and Netball Victoria and funded by the Victorian Coalition Government to provide international students with access to premium Victorian sporting events throughout the year.

GLoBALL enables international students to meet Victorians who, as GLoBALL ambassadors, will introduce students to sports and make them welcome in Victoria. International students are also offered opportunities to connect with local football, cricket and netball sporting clubs.

Essendon Football Club Community Manager Cameron Britt said that ‘it was fantastic to see so many international students attend the match and witness first-hand the roar of 60,000 people at the MCG. For many it was their first time at the ground, let alone watching a live AFL match, so we feel proud to be able to offer what really is a must-do experience for all visitors to Melbourne’.

International students were offered the opportunity to attend four Essendon games in season 2013. The program now looks forward to Summer’s Big Bash League (BBL) season whereby students can attend Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars T20 games.
