Essendon midfielder Jake Melksham has described his goal against Carlton on Friday night to put the Bombers in front in the dying stages of the match as one of the best feelings of his career.

Melksham slotted through his third goal from 45 metres out with just 90 seconds to go putting the Bombers up by five points.

“I was pretty confident going back and then I turned around, looked at the scoreboard and noticed we were down by a point so I had to kick it if we were any chance,” he said post match.

“My legs were like jelly as I was walking in and I just picked a spot kicked it as hard as I could and it went through.”

“It is one of the best feelings I have had in my career so far.”

“It is hard to explain it is just the biggest wave of emotion that comes over your body.”

Melksham praised teammate Jake Carlisle pack mark in the final seconds going as far as comparing it with Leo Barry’s mark in Sydney’s famous premiership win.

“Everyone is talking about my goal but that was Leo Barry like, if he didn’t mark that kick who knows what might have happened,” Melksham said.

“He is having a fantastic season, he is a terrific player and is going to be at the club for a long time.”

Melksham who finished the match with three goals, 21 disposals, seven marks and a disposal efficiency of 71.8 per cent received the plaudits of coach James Hird after the match.

“Jake Melksham has worked really hard on his game, we have given him a lot of extra training sessions, we have put it on him about his form and he has taken it the right way,” Hird said.

“We dropped him for ANZAC Day as we thought that he needed a bit of a rebooted in terms of getting back to doing the basics.”

“He was a bit upset about getting dropped for ANZAC Day which is a big day.”

“Since then he has put a lot of work into his game and I thought the game last night was as well a he has played in 12 months.”

Hird revealed Melksham has been working hard on improving his kicking with forward line coach Matthew Egan.

“Matthew Egan has taken Jake out of training the last four weeks just to specifically work on his kicking and it has started to pay dividends,” Hird said.

“It is the sign of a really good player that wants to learn, take instruction and wants to get better week after week.”

“He is developing into a really good player and last night he got the reward for all the hard work he has been putting in.”
