A number of Essendon big names will undergo post-season surgery in the next week in order to be fit for the 2014 pre-season.

The entire playing group has met with the club’s medical staff over the past two days to determine their preparations for 2014.

Michael Hurley (ankle), Joe Daniher (knee) and Tom Bellchambers (hip) are among the names to undergo surgery over the next few weeks to recover in time for the 2014 pre-season.

Football Operations Manager Steve Alessio confirmed there were no major injury concerns among the playing group.

“There are no real major surgeries in that lot and it is common place with a lot of players now across the league,” Alessio said.

“This time of year they are having surgery and clean ups to prepare themselves and get their bodies right for the pre-season that iscoming up.”

Michael Hurley will go in later this week for surgery on his ankle after rolling the joint a number of times throughout the season.

“Hurls has to have some ankle surgery as he has rolled that a couple of times and the ankle just needs a bit of tightening,” Alessio said.

“He will go in and have that this week which will mean he is off his feet for four weeks.”

Tom Bellchambers (hip) and Dyson Heppell (foot) both underwent surgery last week ruling them out of the final match of the season against Richmond.

“Tom had an arthroscopy in his hip to clear out some of the bone fragments that he had in there but he is up and already walking around so it isn’t too major for him,” Alessio said.

“Dys had a crack in his foot around an old growth plate so they pinned that area and he has been hobbling around on crutches.”

“He will go into a moon boot for two or three weeks so for Dyson it will be in that four to five week period before he returns.”

Youngster Joe Daniher is set to have a clean up of his knee after playing five matches at AFL level in his first season.

“Joe just had a small arthroscopy in the knee as he had a few bone fragments there and just needed a bit of a clean out,” he said.

“It is minimal time of three weeks or so for Joey.”

Alessio confirmed defender Mark Baguley has also undergone a similar clean up to his knee to clear up some looks cartilage.

David Myers has undergone shoulder surgery in an injury that got progressively worse as the 2013 season went on.

“David throughout the year was carrying a bit of a shoulder and that progressively got worse throughout the year,” he said.

“He needs a bit of a clean our and has a similar recovery time of four to six weeks.”

Nick Kommer has had his broken hand plated and is expected to not have his pre-season campaign hindered.

First year player Marty Gleeson has also continued to recover well from shoulder surgery he had a month ago and has returned to training.
