Essendon live wire Leroy Jetta has staked his claim for a midfield role in the senior team with an impressive 34 possession performance in the VFL teams win against Bendigo on Friday night.

Jetta carved up a young Bendigo side using both his evasive skills and class by foot to finish among the best for the Bombers.

Jetta told BomberTV after the match he has been working hard over the pre-season to play an enhanced role through the midfield.

"I have been working pretty closely with Goody (Simon Goodwin) about playing through the midfield over the pre-season," Jetta said.

"I enjoyed the game tonight in the midfield and then moving forward so it was great."

Jetta praised the performance of teammate Jason Winderlich who booted an eight goal haul in just three quarters of football.

"When he kicked three or four in the first couple of minutes I thought he was going to kick 20," he said.

"He was great one on one with his opponent, he is pretty fit and strong so one on one he is hard to play against so it was a great effort by Licka."

Joe Daniher was the other major goal kicker finishing the game with four goals and 11 marks.

"With Joey up forward you just have to put it in his area and you know he is not going to get out marked," Jetta said.

"All the boys played their role and we had a good win so it was enjoyable."

The Bombers now look ahead to their Round 2 clash against Box Hill at Windy Hill next Saturday afternoon.
