Smarting from a Grand Final loss a year earlier, the stakes couldn’t have been higher for the Bombers. 

But it was the Hawks who controlled most of the game. 

The reigning premiers led by 21 points at quarter time and it was a margin they maintained throughout most of the match. 

At the final change, the Bombers trailed by 23 points. 

Goals to Leon Baker, Peter Bradbury and Mark Thompson had the Dons back in the contest early in the final term. 

The Bombers kicked nine goals in a famous last quarter to win by 24 points.
