Essendon assistant coach Sean Wellman has revealed the club was focusing on tailoring the pre-season training program to meet the needs of each individual.

The Bombers have been back training since November 1 with a heavy focus on building the aerobic capacity of the group.

“We are trying to prepare our players for the demands of the game,” Wellman said.

“It is a brutal game so you have to be big and strong and also you need to be able to cover the ground.

“The focus has been on the individual and getting a program that is tailored to the individual because every player is different.”

Wellman said it was important to prepare the club’s list for the rigours of the modern game.

“We have got a young list and you have to be strong in the contest to be able to play the game,” he said on SEN radio.

“With the rotations now it is a game where you have to be able to cover enormous ground.”

“Some guys can carry the weight and cover the ground while some guys can't so it is just getting that balance right between each individual on your list.”

The team will have a two-week break over Christmas before returning to the track in early January.
