Shaun Edwards has been recognised for his volunteer work by winning the Bill Hutchison Community Award at Essendon’s Crichton Medal.

Edwards joined the Bombers at the end of 2013 and has played 12 games with the Club, after 12 at GWS.

This year, Edwards has spent time with AIME, a dynamic educational program that supports Indigenous students through High School and into University, employment or other opportunities.

“Shaun is a caring young man who devotes his time to helping others and is an excellent role model for his teammates,” Essendon’s Head of Community Michelle Murray said.

“He helps Indigenous kids with homework in his own time and outside his commitment to the Club.

“He has a tremendous rapport with young people and plays a crucial support role for them.  He’s also inspired his teammates to join him at these homework sessions.”

Edwards travelled with a group of teammates to the Northern Territory last year where he visited remote communities.

He has been instrumental in driving cultural awareness for people within the Club and has been a facilitator of Essendon’s ‘On the Ball’ program.

“Shaun is a wonderful ambassador for not only the Essendon Football Club, but also the AFL and the Indigenous community,” Murray said.

“He epitomizes the generosity of a selfless person dedicated to making an impact on the lives of Indigenous students to help develop their skills and confidence.”
