James Kelly says his time at Essendon has helped him rediscover his love of the game.

The premiership player finished equal second in last night’s Crichton Medal alongside Joe Daniher, and behind runaway winner Zach Merrett.

After 273 games with Geelong, Kelly joined the Bombers on the eve of the season but went on to play 20 games – missing only two matches when coaches decided to give him a rest.

“I never really appreciated what it was like playing for a big Melbourne club and being here for 12 months I really respect what everyone has done,” he said.

“It has been a real privilege for me to be a part of this footy club.

“I’ve really enjoyed my footy this year.

“Over the course of my career, footy took a lot out of me physically, mentally and emotionally.

“Essendon has sort of reinvigorated my love for the game and for footy, so thank you.”

Kelly also paid tribute to Daniher.  The Bombers key forward booted 43 goals this season – the best return of his career and the highest season tally by an Essendon player since Matthew Lloyd in 2008.

“He’s copped a fair bit of stick publically … but everyone has been really impressed with what he’s been able to achieve throughout the year,” Kelly said.

“He’s a young forward still learning his own game, let alone the game of AFL so I think he should be very proud of himself.”

Kelly and nine other, then former AFL players, were destined for careers in state leagues or preparing to enter full-time employment, when the Bombers season changed dramatically and they were permitted to sign ten additional players.

The group was thanked in front of more than 1,000 fans at last night’s Crichton Medal.

Mark Jamar was one of those recruits.  He was preparing to play in Melbourne’s VAFA competition and was also set to be Essendon’s ruck coach before he signed on as a short term listed player.

“I really appreciated the opportunity to continue playing AFL for another season and I have a lot of memories I’ll cherish forever,” he said.

“Just the quality and the character of the people within the Club … I’ve really enjoyed it and made a lot of good friends.”
