Essendon premiership player Chris Daniher acknowledges he was more ‘workmanlike’ than ‘superstar’ but therein lies the genius of Kevin Sheedy.

Daniher played his entire 124 game career under Sheedy including the 1993 Grand Final win over Carlton.

He said Sheedy had an ability to extract the best out of every player, not just the champions.

“Every player that has been around the Essendon Football Club a few years would owe Kevin Sheedy something,” Daniher said.

“We as a family owe him a lot.

“If you worked hard he gave you the opportunity to get out there and play.

“That’s what he gave me and I had a wonderful 11 years at Essendon.

“First things first, you’ve got to get an opportunity and then you’ve got to have somebody that believes in you if you’re prepared to do the work.

“It wasn’t just the out and out superstars, there are a lot of workmanlike players who turned into really good players with the self belief and the confidence from his side.

“You’ll have your different tiers of players in your football team and he was legendary for throwing players around the field and throwing challenges out.

“He’s an interesting ‘fella’ Kevin, there was never a dull moment.”
