More time as an inside midfielder sparked an impressive run of form from David Zaharakis during the 2017 season.

The 27 year old averaged 18.4 disposals during the opening seven rounds, but from round eight until the end of the season he lifted that rate to 28.8 possessions.

He was a central figure in the side’s most impressive wins against Geelong (31 disposals), West Coast (31 disposals), Port Adelaide (26 disposals, 11 tackles), Collingwood (38 disposals), St Kilda (32 disposals, two goals) and Gold Coast (38 disposals, 15 inside 50s).

The 15 inside 50s against the Suns was the most by an Essendon player ever.

Last month Zaharakis signed a new four contract that will see him remain at the Club until at least 2021.

“David’s preparation is elite so it’s no surprise he’s been such a consistent performer over a long period of time,” Essendon Coach John Worsfold said.

“Last year he carried a significant workload in the midfield and played an important leadership role, not only supporting Brendon Goddard, but also mentoring his younger teammates.

“He’s had a slightly different role this year which he’s adapted to really well.

“His running power and skill level makes him a central part of our midfield group for not only this season, but pleasingly the next four years as well.”

Zaharakis won the Crichton Medal in 2011 and finished fifth in the count last year.
