'We’re on the move'

BTV: Trade | Adrian Dodoro Update - Oct 12 Adrian Dodoro gives us an update on the trade period so far, including the deal that saw Devon Smith come to the Bombers.

Essendon List Manager Adrian Dodoro is confident securing the deal for Devon Smith will help the Club land its other trade targets.

Smith became the Bombers first acquisition of the trade period when he signed a four-year deal with the Club.

Under the deal with GWS, the Dons receive Smith, pick 23 and a future second round pick.

In return the Giants receive pick 11 and a future third round selection.

It leaves the Bombers with four second round picks over the next two years and next year’s first round selection to use to try to secure Jake Stringer and Adam Saad who have expressed a desire to play for the Club.

“We’re being very proactive in trying to get the deals done as quickly as we can,” Dodoro said.

“We’re on the move and we’ve got some ammunition up our sleeve to try and get the other two deals done hopefully … we hope to get them done fairly quickly.”

Smith played 109 games for the Giants and kicked 100 goals.

Dodoro expects Smith to be used in the midfield when he runs out for the Bombers for the first time.

“Devon has got speed and endurance, he uses the ball really well, he’s got a really good footy brain and I go back to his numbers at TAC Cup – he was getting high 30s (disposals) week in and week out,” he said.

“We’re starting to get a really nice mix and he’s a beautiful age demographic around 23-24 years of age and he’s got another eight or nine years of really good football ahead of him."

Smith made his debut in 2012 and played 16 games this season.

He started the season with two three goals hauls and averaged five tackles per game.

“He is an exceptional talent, he was second in the best and fairest at a young age and he’s coming from a club that has got a lot of talent but he just couldn’t get in the midfield,” Dodoro said.

“He gets that opportunity with us and I think he’ll prove to be an excellent player.”
