Essendon wants to meet with AFL umpires coach Hayden Kennedy this week after a lopsided free kick count in recent matches.

Coach John Worsfold hopes to see Kennedy after his team has recorded 45 free kicks to the opposition's 80 over the last three weeks.

"I've had a couple of discussions with 'Hock' [AFL head of football Steve Hocking] personally and 'Woosha' has had some contact with Hayden as well," football manager Dan Richardson told News Limited.

"There's a level of concern around and we would like to get to the bottom of it if we can.

"There may well be something wrong with how we're coaching our players.

"Is there issues with our approach technically, or are there examples of where the umpires are getting it wrong?

"I'm not sure yet. We'll work through a few examples and see if we can learn from it.

"We'll aim to schedule a meeting with Hayden [this week]."

Richardson has spoken to Hocking twice about the Dons' concerns over the past fortnight, while Worsfold called Kennedy last week about the 11-21 free kick count in the win against North Melbourne.

However, they are now keen to meet in person to discuss why they are being penalised in some circumstances.

"We're not suggesting that umpiring is the reason why we win or lose, you just want clarification on consistency," Richardson said.

In the last three weeks, the Bombers have recorded wins over West Coast and the Kangaroos, and a loss to Collingwood on Sunday.

The free kick count against the Magpies was 17 to 26, with frustrated Bomber fans using the hashtag #freekickCollingwood on Twitter afterwards.

The News Limited report said the Bombers' confusion surrounded multiple holding-the-ball rulings or non-rulings, and they weren't concerned with the free kick differential per se.
