Essendon Football Club is pleased to announce Shaun McKernan will don the sash until at least 2020 after the 28-year-old signed a new two-year deal.

The key forward has played 62 AFL games, 28 in the red and black and 34 for the Adelaide Crows.

McKernan said he was looking forward to committing to another solid pre-season.

“I’m thrilled to sign on with the Bombers. We are building towards something special and I am excited to be a part of it,” McKernan said.

“I felt this year I was able to contribute strongly to the side and I’m looking forward to continuing that over the next two years.

“Over the pre-season I want to build on my game and not rely solely on my marking but also offer defensive pressure in the forward line.

“I am eager to get back on the track and work hard over the off-season, and see what we can achieve as a team in 2019 and beyond.”

McKernan was a consistent performer in the Bombers forward line in 2018, booting 16 goals from 10 games before injuring his hamstring in round 18.

Senior Coach, John Worsfold, said McKernan will continue to play a significant role for Essendon.

“Shaun plays an important role for our side as a strong marking forward who can play in the ruck as well. Shaun had an excellent pre-season this year and the results were seen in his performances,” Worsfold said.

“His attitude and work ethic are outstanding and make him a well-respected member of this team.

“We are extremely happy to see Shaun fulfilling his potential and we believe he will be an important part of our team in the future.”
