Dyson Heppell is once again among the key chances for the Crichton Medal after putting together another brilliant season in charge of the Bombers.

Heppell won the best and fairest award in 2014 and the more seasoned midfielder could add to that victory after having another season to remember this year.

The 26-year-old led his side from the front in 2018, heading the squad for average disposals (equal with Zach Merrett), contested possessions, inside 50s and clearances (equal with David Myers).

The captain repeatedly put his body on the line for his side and never wavered in his constant drive to improve and get the best out of the squad despite some difficult times throughout the year.

When the results weren’t going the club’s way, Heppell continued to drive the high standards he expects of the side and put in consistently strong performances. And when the Bombers made their late surge, winning 10 of their last 14 games of the season, he was right there again to lead impressively.

A rare mix of skill and grit characterised Heppell’s season as he showed his class on the outside and grunt on the inside through the midfield, while he was always nearby both forward and back when his side needed him the most.

BEST PERFORMANCE – Round 17 v Gold Coast
Heppell was simply outstanding against the Suns, leading the side brilliantly to an important 44-point interstate victory. The skipper was at his tough and classy best on the night, working hard both in and out of the contest to great effect and taking home a maximum 10 AFLCA Coaches Votes. Heppell gathered 36 disposals, 15 contested possessions, seven clearances and five tackles in the win, with AFL.com.au predicting three Brownlow votes to go his way for the performance.
