With Essendon’s inaugural AFLW side set to play their first ever match for Premiership points on Saturday night, star recruit Jess Wuetschner is relishing the opportunity to run out with her new teammates.

The 30-year-old Tasmanian joined the Bombers in June as a delisted free agent, bringing a wealth of AFLW experience from the Brisbane Lions with the 2021 Premiership, 2018 All-Australian honours and multiple leading goal-kicker awards under her belt.

Wuetschner couldn't be keener for to the Dons’ clash with Hawthorn being moved to Marvel Stadium after a huge influx of ticket sales saw the fixture shuffled to the 53,000-seat capacity arena.

“It’s been a long time since I played on Marvel, maybe seven or eight years ago now," Wuetschner said.

"It’s an amazing deck and a huge occasion for women’s football as well. I’m keen to see the team out there and show what we can do."

The tough small forward has also been enticed by the improvement of the team’s younger talents over their pre-season hit-outs.

“A lot of the young girls like Paige Scott and Amber Clarke have really impressed. They showed a bit of Bombers football, which is exciting," Wuetschner said.

After a productive 38 games over five seasons at the Lions, Wuetschner has settled in easily with the red and black, and she’s well aware of the significance attached to the club’s inaugural women's game.

“I’m enjoying the new culture, being a part of a different atmosphere and a new playing group," Wuetschner said.

"Being a part of a club like Essendon with big history against Hawthorn is exciting, so there’s a lot of buzz around the club and within myself as well.”

Essendon’s history-making AFLW season kicks off at 7:10pm this Saturday against Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium.
