General manager, football Josh Mahoney says the Bombers are working through a variety of options ahead of next month’s NAB AFL National Draft.

With the Dons holding pick No.4, the club’s fourth top-10 selection in three years, Mahoney is excited with the versatility which comes with the pick.

Mahoney also noted the club’s later selections may come into action with potential NGA and father-son talents waiting in the wings.

“Obviously with [pick 4] we’re going to be at the high end, so we’re working through that at the moment. Pick No.22 is an interesting one, that depends on what happens in front of you, so they have to look at a range of different players,” Mahoney said.

“To add into that mix, we also have a couple of potential father-son’s in the Davey twins, and an NGA player in Anthony Munkara, so we’ve got to be on our toes and ready for anything.”

The variety of options gives Essendon a key opportunity to strengthen a list already littered with young talent.

Although the Davey twins are still yet to publicly nominate the NEC Hangar as their preferred destination, Mahoney believes their exposure to the club through the James Hird Academy programs, which has seen the pair train in pre-season sessions with the AFL list, puts the Bombers in a handy spot.

“It’d be great to have that option to consider the Davey’s to come on our list. They’ve been exposed to training with our AFL team at different stages, and we’ve been in contact with them regularly,” Mahoney said.

“Obviously Jayden’s working through an ACL, so we’ve been able to support him through that. Alwyn’s been playing some good footy, and they’ve had enough involvement in the club to know what they’re walking into, so they’d feel comfortable.”

New senior coach Brad Scott is already making his presence felt around the club, having not missed a beat since his appointment.

“[Brad’s] jumped right into it. It was important for him to get a handle on our list, and the most positive thing was that his idea of where the list is at was very consistent with ours,” Mahoney said.

“When the staff come back in early November, we want to sit down and make sure everyone’s clear on what the roles are, and how we’re going to improve as a department. We’re really excited to explain that to the players as well.”

The off-season work of the playing group has also impressed Mahoney.

After having some time off, the importance of starting on a good note hasn’t been lost on the group.

“They’ve had their overseas trips and they enjoyed that period of time, which they had to because they missed out on a couple of years of off-season, but now they’re into training mode which is exciting to see,” Mahoney said.

“They’re all on their programs and they want to make sure to give Brad a good first impression, which he’s been pretty clear with them on. It’s good to see them putting in work.”
