Essendon legend Michael Long OAM announced on Wednesday morning that his 20th Anniversary Long Walk to Canberra has now been brought forward.

The walk is now set to begin from Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday, August 27 at approximately 10:30am, with the opening leg to finish at Windy Hill in Essendon.

Long is expected to arrive in Canberra on September 14.

The event represents a celebration of Long's initial walk from Melbourne to Parliament House in Canberra back in 2004, bringing Aboriginal affairs back onto the national agenda.

"Today, I want to ask all Australians a question. Will you come walk with me?," Long said.

"It's nearly 20 years since my first Long Walk. Back then, I walked to ask Prime Minister John Howard three questions: Where is the love for First Nations people? Where is the voice? Where is the vision?

"I want all Australians to come walk with me. I want all the sporting codes – Australian rules, soccer, netball, basketball, rugby, swimming, tennis – to come walk with me. I want corporate Australia to come walk with me. I want community groups to come walk with me, and I want Aboriginal organisations to come walk with me."
