Courtenay Dempsey’s ten years of service was recognised at the 2015 AGM, with the 28 year old being awarded life membership of the Club.

Dempsey joined the Bombers after being selected with pick number 19  in the 2005 draft and made his debut against Carlton in 2007.

The dashing defender made a name for himself playing for the Marunda Hawks in Cairns before moving to Brisbane to play with the Kenmore Bears.

“When I first got drafted I actually looked to my parents and asked them where Essendon was,” joked Dempsey upon accepting his award

“I didn’t have a clue where Essendon was.”

It didn’t take long for Dempsey to get used to his surroundings, and although injuries slowed his early days at the Club, he was able to secure a position in the team throughout the 2009 season – when he played 20 games.

Dempsey’s most impressive season came in 2010, where his run off the half-back line and ability to win the ball saw him finish in the top five for disposals, kicks, effective kicks, contested possession and rebound 50s at the club.

The journey has not always been easy for Dempsey.

Struggling with form throughout the year, Dempsey found himself playing for Essendon VFL in the middle of the 2015 season.

Out of contract at season’s end, it would have been easy for Dempsey to hang up the boots and give away his dream.

True to his persistence and passion for the game, however, Dempsey worked harder than ever at training and on the field to get back to an elite level.

He would also make an important shift to the opposite end of the ground, reinventing himself as a dangerous forward – kicking four goals in three games as well as bringing defensive pressure to the forward half.

Dempsey’s loyalty and service to the Club is well known and is one of the reasons the fans, coaches and teammates hold him in such high esteem.

“Ever since I’ve moved down here and noticed how big this club is, and how loyal and massive the supporter base is with this great club,” Dempsey said.

“ I’m honoured and I’m glad to be here still and hopefully continue for years to come.

“We’ll hopefully bring in a premiership in the next few years.”
