David Zaharakis and Travis Colyer pushed themselves to the limit during Tuesday morning’s 2km time trial around Princes Park.

It was a neck and neck battle between the pair as they came down to the finish of the grueling test of endurance on day two of pre-season training for 2015.

The enthralling battle took place behind eventual winner Brent Stanton with Zaharakis tiring down the stretch before pushing himself over the line alongside Colyer.

Zaharakis said having someone alongside him to push him along made the run easier to complete.

“I sort of had him at about the one kilometer mark when I was probably about ten metres in front of him,” Zaharakis said.

“It was about at the 500 metre mark he tried to creep in front of me and I just thought to myself he is not going to be me.

“It was probably with about 400 metres to go, we ran side by side and that helps you get a better time.

“He got under his required time, which he probably wouldn’t have got if he went past me and just sort of cruised.

“We were both sprinting, it was a great finish and it ended up being a dead heat.”

It was an impressive run from Colyer following a breakout season in 2014 resulting in him being awarded Most Improved Player award at the Crichton Medal.

Zaharakis has returned to training in good condition following a lay off that included a trip to visit the Indian community with the club’s multicultural program.

The 24-year-old still found time during his off-season adventures to maintain his fitness base.

“It wasn’t too bad, I have ran here a lot in the off-season so I am getting used to the track now,” he said.

“The boys ran some good times and I am sure a few of them are happy with it.”
