Essendon's injury woes have continued this week with captain Jobe Watson battling to overcome an ankle injury in time for Saturday night's clash with the Bulldogs.
General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said Watson is currently a 50-50 chance to play, with a final decision on his availability set to be made on Thursday.
“He is still a chance to play at this stage but Jobe has had a lot of knocks to his lower leg over the past couple of weeks and we did see on the weekend that the injuries are starting to take their toll and the main one is his ankle,” Hamilton said.
“He has had a few knocks to his calf and a few contusions but at the moment his ankle is pretty sore and it is a six day turn around so whether he’s right or whether he’s not we probably won’t know until Thursday.”
Hamilton praised Watson's resiliance in what has been a tough first season as skipper.
“He’s played every game this season which is an outstanding effort in his first year as captain and he’s been very stoic and gone about things in the right way,"" Hamilton said.
Essendon key position prospect Scott Gumbleton has undergone surgery to repair some minor niggles ahead of the 2011 pre-season. The 22-year-old had two minor operations on his thumb and finger last week and will undergo an arthroscope on his knee later this week.
