Don't miss the third annual Walk in Harmony on Sunday 7 June in the lead up to Essendon’s Round 11 match against Adelaide.
The Walk in Harmony is a symbolic walk to Etihad Stadium that brings together Melbourne’s multicultural communities to celebrate Australia’s success as a culturally diverse society and to promote social cohesion.
The Walk leaves from the Flemington Community Centre (Melway Ref 2A 1D), following the bike path to Etihad Stadium, where community members will participate in a community festival before watching the match between Essendon and Adelaide. 500 participants will also have an opportunity to walk a lap on Etihad Stadium before the game.
The Walk in Harmony was established by Essendon as part of its Multicultural Program. In it’s three year existence, over 4,000 people from various backgrounds completed the 4km walk from the Flemington Community Centre to Etihad Stadium. Essendon is proud to be involved in working with Victoria’s migrant and refugee communities. Australian Football has a unique capacity to capture the hearts and minds of people from all walks of life. Essendon believes that Australian Rules football – something ingrained in the culture and history of Australia – has a valuable role to play.
Walk in Harmony activities commence at 9am and there will be a range of events at the Flemington Community Centre in the lead up to the Walk which commences at 11am. These include:
Meeting Essendon players
African Henna and Tea Ceremony
Australian Federal Police Expo
Multicultural Music and Food
MFB SmokeBUSter and Racing displays
Football activities and games
The club is also encouraging members and supporters to wear a touch of orange to the game and support Victoria as a culturally diverse society. The first 2,000 participants on the day will receive a free Walk in Harmony orange t-shirt and entry to the game. For more information, contact Jieh-Yung Lo on 8371 0249 or via email at jlo@essendonfc.com.au
Walk in Harmony is proudly supported by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
To mark the event, Essendon's theming will incorporate a hint of orange this week. We encourage Essendon's supporters to adopt this theme as they head to the football this weekend.
Initiatives include:
- All Etihad staff and catering wearing orange ribbons
- One-metre orange Walk in Harmony feet at each main entrance.
- Bachar Houli speaking on the importance of multiculturalism on the big screen pre-match
- 20 multicultural women to form a guard of honour as the players run out.
Who could forget ANZAC Day 2009 – one of the most remarkable Essendon wins in recent memory. Could you imagine the feeling of sitting in the coach's box when young Zaharakis kicked the winning goal? Anzac Day is the most anticipated fixture of the home and away season and it never seems to disappoint.
