Could you name the eight current AFL footballers who have kicked in excess of 100 goals for Essendon? Ponder it for a while and then go to the full story for the answer. Essendon's greatest ever goalkicker is Simon Madden who kicked 575. The Bombers have a number of modern-day players who will continue the climb up the club's all-time goalkicking table this season.

Firstly, let's see if you knew who the eight players were. In order we have Matthew Lloyd (354), James Hird (223), Mark Mercuri (215), Stephen Alessio (160), Scott Lucas (148), Michael Long (142), Che Cockatoo Collins (109) and Blake Caracella (104). No doubt a few people overlooked Cockatoo-Collins who shifted to Port Adelaide at the beginning of 1999.

The Bombers have 62 players who have kicked in excess of 100 goals for the club. Those still playing have an excellent chance of achieving some personal milestones this season and creeping up the list at the same time. Matthew Lloyd is currently in 11th position with 354 goals. Should he again kick 100 goals this season, he will move into 5th position in the all-time list - one ahead of Terry Daniher but still trailing Madde, John Coleman (537), Paul Salmon (509) and Bill Hutchison (495).

James Hird only needs to kick 27 goals this season to crack the 250-goal mark and move into 18th place ahead of Robin Close. Mark Mercuri needs 35 goals to achieve the same feat.

Scott Lucas needs just two goals to reach 150 but he will be aiming to add another 50 to that in 2001 and crack the 200 mark. Michael Long needs another eight goals to reach 150 while Steve Alessio needs 40 to reach 200 career goals. It will be interesting to see how 2001 pans out in front of goal.
