Essendon Football Club can confirm tonight's NAB Cup game against St Kilda in Wangaratta has been cancelled.

The club's flights to Wangaratta were unable to land, despite a number of attempts anddue to extreme weather conditions the team returned to Melbourne.

Essendon CEO Ian Robson said it was disappointing that the game had to be cancelled.

""It is very frustrating for everyone involved including both teams and the local community,"" he said.

“Matters have been taken out of our control by virtue of the extreme weather

""Both planes tried to land on three separate occasions and were unsuccessful before beingdirected to return to Melbourne.”

“We did everything we could to get the players here for the game but unfortunately the weather conditions continued to deteriorate and the planes were unable to attempt to return to Wangaratta.

“We were always going to come up by plane to enable the team to return back to Melbourne tonight as we have a short turnaround heading into next week’s game against Sydney at Etihad Stadium on Friday night.”
