Round 6 proved to be another difficult week to pick a winner. The biggest upset came on Saturday night at the Dome when Sydney defeated Collingwood by 20-points. It is the third consecutive loss for the Magpies. The six interstate teams all had comprehensive victories over the weekend and West Coast, Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane all showed that they can win matches at home and also away.

The round kicked off Friday night at the Dome when the Kangaroos took on Adelaide. The match generated a lot of interest because former Kangaroos skipper Wayne Carey faced his old side. There was a lot of tension between Carey and his former teammates but Carey had the last laugh kicking four goals in his side’s 54-point victory. The win pushed Adelaide to second spot on the ladder.

Hawthorn finally returned to the winner’s list with an 11-point win against Carlton at Optus Oval. It was the Hawks third win for the season and the victory puts them back in reach of the top eight. Melbourne continued a disappointing few weeks when West Coast overran them in the last quarter to win by a convincing 33-points. It is the third straight loss for the Demons who have dropped down to 13th spot on the ladder.

Port Adelaide put an end to Richmond’s winning streak when they further proved the are a serious premiership threat this season. Port Adelaide controlled the match all night and ran out victors by 27-points. Geelong gave the reigning premiers a scare at Skilled Stadium but were unable to take the four points. Brisbane outclassed the home team in the end winning by 14-points.

It was a fiery affair at The Dome yesterday between St.Kilda and the Western Bulldogs. A quarter time scuffle between players from both teams will be sure to grab the attention of the AFL Tribunal this week. It was an arm-wrestle all game and St.Kilda were too strong in the end and took the honours by 15-points.

Essendon was unable to string two wins together yesterday when Fremantle defeated them by 31-points. The home team controlled the game all day and a nine goal third term put the result beyond doubt. Essendon has dropped to sixth on the ladder and has three wins along with Sydney, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Fremantle and St.Kilda.

Brisbane still holds down top spot on the ladder with five wins and one draw. Adelaide, West Coast, Port Adelaide and Richmond are close behind with four wins. The Western Bulldogs and Geelong share bottom spot with just one win and the Kangaroos, Melbourne and Carlton are marginally ahead with two wins to their name.
