Essendon's assault on the 2022 season is underway, with its young brigade hitting the track for the first day of pre-season.

The Bombers' first-to-five-year players were put through their paces in wet weather at the NEC Hangar on Wednesday, returning to the track two weeks earlier than the rest of the competition as part of the club's proposed part-time schedule until Christmas.

Former Crow Jake Kelly, who was recruited as an unrestricted free agent, took part in his first session with his new teammates, while new coaches Dale Tapping, Brent Stanton and Alex Rance also got to work.

The rest of the Bombers' players will return to the club on Monday, November 29.
