A number of experienced Essendon players will return from injury for their first hitout of 2012 when the Bombers take on Sydney at Etihad Stadium this Friday night.

Michael Hurley, Jason Winderlich and Heath Hocking have all been named to play in Friday night's Round Three NAB Cup clash with the Swans.

General manager of football operations Paul Hamilton said the trio’s return was a positive for the team in the lead up to the season.

“We are going to field a fairly strong side on Friday night and it is a good opportunity for our members to come along and watch the boys,” Hamilton said.

“Our supporters will be very happy to see Michael Hurley back in the red and black this week and we are also excited about that.

“We are looking forward to Jason Winderlich returning this Friday night, it will be his first game back and he will get two full games in before putting his hand up for round one selection.”

Hamilton said the club was pleased with the progress of it's injured players under a month from the start of the home and away season.

“It has been a case of getting guys back on the track, getting them fit, getting them some training and getting some time into them,” he said.

“We still have a few injuries but we hope over the next few weeks we really start to get everyone back.""

Scott Gumbleton and Brent Prismall, both currently on the long term injury list, are continuing to make solid progress in their rehabilitation programs.

“Gumby and Pris are both travelling really well and the key thing is while they have been on the long term injury list they haven’t had a setback,” Hamilton said.

“Brent is going along really well remembering that his knee injury was later in the year so we are not expecting him back in at least that first month of football.

“With Scott after he had that back operation last year he hasn’t had one setback, he actually looks stronger and fitter then he has for a long time.”

A slight calf strain will see defender Nathan Lovett Murray miss this weekend’s match along with youngster Alex Browne who is continuing to recover from a hamstring injury.

“Nathan’s injury is not a super serious one but it will see him out this week, he won’t play at all,” Hamilton said.
