Essendon utility Nik Cox will see a foot and ankle surgeon for an opinion about surgical options after scans confirmed a Lisfranc injury to his right foot.

Cox sustained the injury when kicking during the Bombers’ practice match against the Swans on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the news is more positive for midfielder Jye Caldwell who sustained a shoulder injury during the Bombers’ clash with Sydney on Saturday night in a collision with Thomas McCartin.

Scans on Monday confirmed an AC joint injury with Caldwell still remaining a chance to be available for selection this weekend against Richmond.

Executive general manager of football Josh Mahoney said the news was mixed for both Cox and Caldwell.

“We anticipate to know the extent of Nik’s injury over the coming days after he meets with a foot and ankle surgeon for further determination,” Mahoney said.

“It is likely he will be sidelined for several weeks as a result of the Lisfranc injury which is disappointing for Nik, but we will know more in the coming days.

“As expected, scans confirmed an AC joint injury after Jye’s collision on Saturday night. As such, we will wait to see how Jye’s shoulder injury settles over the coming days before we determine his availability for selection this weekend for the Dreamtime at the ‘G blockbuster.”
