The Essendon Football Club Annual General Meeting was held tonight with the highlight of the evening the presentation of life membership to former captain and assistant coach Neale Daniher.
Daniher was one of six life memberships awarded with former players Mark Johnson and Mark Bolton also given the prestigious award. Johnson was unable to attend due to interstate training commitments.
Board member, Tim Jonas, was awarded life membership after serving 10-years as a board member. Ray Williams (head trainer since 1996) and Bob Tobias (football staff) were awarded life membership after reaching 20-years of service to the club as football support staff.
""It is a bit of a surprise to get life membership at this great club. It is a great club and I wish Matthew Knights and Matthew Lloyd the best of luck in making it a great team again,"" Daniher said in accepting the award.
“The Danihers have had a long association with this Club and we wish the team all the best. I would also like to wish Darcy (Daniher) all the best and hope you get the opportunity to play for this mighty Club.""
Mark Bolton reminded young players how quickly a career passes in accepting his award.
""Thank you again to the football club. It has taken me 10 years to realise it isn’t a place, a patch of dirt or a jumper – it is about people and this is a club that is home to some great people and supporters,"" Bolton said.
""Thanks to my teammates. You live in each other’s pockets, enjoy the wins and suffer the losses together. Thanks for your support – you can’t get through one year let alone ten years without each other’s support. I am proud to have played with all of you.""
The club also confirmed its net profit of $2.014 million for the financial year ending October 31st, 2007 and the results of the 2007 election with Tim Jonas, Phil Pryor and Beverly Knight being declared as directors.
Former Essendon champion, James Hird, was today recognised for his achievements both on and off the field, being awarded both the GNC LiveWell Football Achievement award and the Open Universities Australia Personal Development award at AFLPA's Madden Medal luncheon.
