Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy says the Bombers are not a club in decline despite the groundswell of opinion the club will struggle in 2003. “We are one of the youngest clubs – I don’t think we are going through decline, in fact I think it is a very exciting time for this club,” Sheedy said prior to this afternoon’s intra-club practice match at Windy Hill.

“We just want to find four players to replace Caracella, Blumfield, Heffernan and Moorcroft. We only finished a game out last season and some of those players didn’t have great years – that is the challenge for this club and the players themselves because it is their careers when it is all said and done,” Sheedy said.

“It is about time David Hille jumped up for us. It is about time Alessio had his best year ever – Dean Wallis did at the same age. Perhaps Alessio needs to take a leaf out of Dean Wallis’ book and say I’m going to play my best season ever.

“I actually thought last year was tremendously challenging for us – we had four six-week plus injuries to four important players. This club is very good at bouncing back – we have played in three preliminary finals and seven Grand Finals in the last 20 years so we have been in the last four every second year. We think Joel Reynolds will be a good player and Andrew Welsh. Mark McVeigh is coming along well and Dean Solomon is back.

“Jason Laycock and Jobe Watson have shown a bit and we still haven’t seen Jason Winderlich who is a good honest player. It won’t be long before he gets into the side if he is hard and tough. It is a matter of finding who has the will and the spirit to play – it is pretty hard to measure spirit isn’t it?”
