Essendon coach James Hird expects new recruits Dylan Van Unen and Nick Kommer to be pushing for senior selection in round one.

The Bombers pulled a surprise at Thursday night’s draft when they selected little known defender Van Unen from Frankston with pick 51.

“Dylan Van Unen who has been playing at Frankston is a half back flanker who can probably fit straight into our team after we get him big and strong,” Hird said.

Kommer from East Perth was taken at pick 73 and has already been training with Essendon during the pre-season.

“Nick Kommer is a guy we are looking to play senior footy next year, he is very fast, very good with the ball and very fit.”

Hird said the pair, both 22-years-old, would add important depth to the club’s list in 2013.

“With Dylan and Nick we just wanted a bit of support for our team, the rest are pretty young but even Dylan and Nick are 22 so they are not super old.”

“They allow us to have some depth and we expect them to push for senior selection next year.”

Hird is excited about welcoming Father/Son selection Joe Daniher, taken at pick 10, to the club next season.

“Obviously Joe Daniher gives you a great start with potentially the best player in the draft,” he said

“There was only really one player there that we missed out on that we wanted the rest were exactly what we wanted to pick.”
