Essendon has snapped a mini-drought with a high-pressure victory over Hawthorn at the MCG. The Bombers scrapped and scrambled their way to a seven-point victory. Although Essendon led at every change, the Hawks were in front for the majority of the final term, but the inspiration of powerhouse Jason Johnson and a snapped goal in the dying minutes by Paul Barnard saw the Dons take the points.

This was the replay of last year’s Preliminary Final, and the result was very similar. Just how much was at stake after two disappointing losses was obvious for all to see when the Bomber players embraced and celebrated after the final siren. There was no lack of intensity and some conspicuous displays of courage, but damp and windy conditions meant this match was not much of a spectacle.
