Bendigo Bombers coach, Adrian Hickmott, believes last weekend’s win against Frankston was the best he has seen the team work together this season and he hopes for a similar performance when they take on Williamstown at Queen Elizabeth Oval this Sunday.

Bendigo will be boosted by the inclusion of Essendon-listed players Jay Nash and Tayte Pears who have been named in a quality defence that will need to get on top if Bendigo are to make it two in a row.

Bendigo had their first win since Round 1 when they survived a 40-point comeback by Frankston to kick the last three goals and win by three points in what Hickmott described as a vital win for his young side.

Hickmott said it was a game where every player contributed and the win would give his young group great confidence going forward.

“A win like that is extremely important. To be able to come over the top of a team like that after they got in front showed great character. It is also good for the confidence of all of the young guys,” he said.

Hickmott said the communication between Bendigo and Essendon listed players was coming together well and the weekend showed that they were making good progress in this area.

“They have improved a lot both Bendigo and the Essendon listed players. They were able to communicate and come together under pressure on the weekend and that was one of the most pleasing things to come out of the win,” he said.

Bendigo were last weekend buoyed by the presence of Essendon listed players Jason Laycock, Leroy Jetta and Kyle Reimers and all three were instrumental in the club's second win for the season. The coach was very impressed by the performance, inparticular, of Laycock.

“Jason Laycock stands out at VFL level because of his size and because he works extremely hard in the air and in the ruck all day,” he said.

With Laycock and a number of other Essendon-listed players out of the Bendigo side this weekend Hickmott will look to Blair Holmes, Stewart Crameri and James Flaherty who have been in great form all year to continue to play well.

Williamstown, this weekend’s opponent, sit second on the VFL ladder after six weeks with five wins and a loss to last year's VFL Premiers Geelong, and will provide a stern test for an improving Bendigo.

Hickmott said while it was going to be tough to overcome Williamstown he was confident if they played in a similar way to last week they would be very competitive and urged all Bendigo supporters to get down to the last game at home before a three week long stint away from QEO.

BendigoBombers play Williamstown at Queen Elizabeth Oval at 2pm on Sunday.
