Essendon hit the training track tonight with a 30 minute practice match as Kevin Sheedy put the challenge out to his players: who is desperate enough to wear the red and black? With nine consecutive losses, including a thumping against Adelaide last week, Sheedy is looking for a group of players that deserve selection.

""After a performance like that, you just can’t keep picking the same team over and over,"" Sheedy explained before training this afternoon.

""I am looking for a team who wants to put up their hand and play for Essendon and wear the guernsey with the honour that it should be, and I think the fans feel that too.""

""The issue now is for all players to tell us who really wants to be a top class player again, because when you get beaten by 23 goals in a match you are saying I can’t be selected really.

""I now have 22 players who have got to deserve selection, so the ball is right out there to be played now by every player on our list and we will play it that way.

""Hopefully we are planning and looking at all the issues at the moment. Whether I start bringing some rookies onto the list and playing them, because we have three or four boys out at the moment for the season, so we can achieve that with one or two of the rookies.

The rookie that is most likely to be elevated is Ben Jolley, who Sheedy suggested might play against Geelong on Friday night.

""He is a player I am considering pretty seriously at the moment, he is a very good, strong footballer. He shows terrific leadership,"" Sheedy said.

Sheedy also indicated that Jason Johnson would return to the senior side this week, while the club would err on the side of caution with Scott Camporeale and bring him back via the Bendigo Bombers for some match practice after missing an extended period with a hamstring injury.
