A keynote presentation from Rosalie Kunoth-Monks highlighted another successful Long Walk Women’s Luncheon event last week in Melbourne.
Kunoth-Monks, Mayor of Barkly Shire in the Northern Territory, spoke about Indigenous people living in the shire subjected to poverty and the need for change.
The recent success of the Long Walk Women’s Luncheon was capped off with the event raising over $10,000 for The Long Walk Cultural Exchange – which will go to the Koorie Heritage Trust for cultural exchange between Victorian and Tasmanian Aboriginal weavers.
Over 540 guests heard from esteemed speakers Kunoth-Monks and Fay June Ball, who touched on issues Indigenous people face on a daily basis.
The event, now in its sixth year, brings together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal women to celebrate the role and achievements of women in our community.
When Essendon legend Michael Long walked to Canberra in 2004, he was joined by some remarkable women including Merryn Apma, who along with non-Indigenous businesswoman Sue Davies initiated the first women’s luncheon in 2006.
This year, The Long Walk is proud to announce the introduction of the event in Adelaide and Darwin. The Long Walk campaign is excited to work with local communities to bring this popular celebratory event to these cities.
Special guests for the Adelaide luncheon include Terri Janke; NAIDOC Person of the Year 2011, Karina Lester; Aboriginal Language Worker, Sonya Rankine, Shelley Ware and Leila Gurrawiwi from Marngrrok Footy Show. Leila will also MC the Darwin event where Shellie Morris will perform.
